More than twenty aircraft had to divert from the approved landing direction and police was notified on Monday after preventive action taken by PANSA air traffic controllers upon information of Embraer 195 pilots flight from Munich to Warsaw about a near miss with an unmanned aircraft, so-called drone. An instantaneous intervention of PANSA air traffic team allowed for safe landing of approaching aircraft.
The President of PANSA Magdalena Jaworska stated that "for the first time Polish Air Navigation Services Agency took advantage of an Agreement signed on 28 April, 2015 with Police Headquarters concerning operational cooperation on prevention of aviation threats".
On Monday afternoon PANSA air traffic controllers were notified by the flight crew of a Lufthansa flight that during approach to landing in the area of Warsaw suburb Piaseczno a near miss with a drone took place. The air traffic service immediately decided on a deviation from the landing direction of the following aircraft and initiated the aviation threat notification to the police executed based on the Agreement of April 2015. Acting on the basis of the Agreement the police dispatched an operational helicopter and intervention patrols to the area. A military helicopter was also engaged to fly along the runway in use. The drone was not spotted by the police nor the military patrols.
According to the latest news the drone’s owner has been detained by the police.
